its useful so we can see in the filename which drawings we are opening, also if we need to put them into our document managements system we can copy and past description with out having to open each drawing to find out what it is. this will save our company hours and hours of work.

Afternoon All,
I dont believe this has been fully implemented yet, for the reasons below;
Currently this only works when you download a drawing using the download icon (three green arrows) or when you add items to a clipboard and download from there. Why cant the same principle also apply when you click on a drawing and open it as this is the most common way to view files when just browsing. P.S i rarely use the three green arrows to download items as you end up downloading all of the secondary files which tend to be .dwg files which I dont need and makes the file size unnecessarily large.
Also, when Viewpoint appends the status code to the file name it gives the status code but also the description of the status code e.g. S1 - Suitable for Coordination. All I want on the file name is the status code i.e. S1. The status code description just adds unnecessary characters to an already long file name and could take the filepath past the 260 character limit set by Windows OS.
The metadata is appended using an underscore as a delimeter whereas the UK National Annex states that the UK should use a hyphen - as the delimeter. Therefore not compliant to the UK National Annex.
It would also be nice to have some more choice on the structure of the file name, like others have suggested Name-Rev-Status-Description or Name-Rev-Description or even better it would be good for the user to be able to come up with whatver sequence they like if that is possible.
Because of the above I am currently asking design teams to upload information to Viewpoint with the status, rev and description included in the filename and this is causing some friction which is understandable as the CDE's should by now be able to append this metadata to file names and I appreciate that this can be done but I believe there are flaws as I have noted above.
Just to add that this suggestion has been around for 5 years now, plenty of time for it to have been developed into a much slicker system. It would be good to get some feedback from Viewpoint to the above please as like I say, it is causing some friction between project teams at the moment in asking them to include the fields within the file name before uploading to Viewpoint.
Could we have "name, rev, description"?
Does anyone know if this has been achieved yet?
Noted thanks John, "Name" will be included as an option also.
Kind regards,
Andrew
Thanks for the update Andrew. Can you also review the other options as noted above on the comments. One issue is when exporting drawings for COBie purposes is the file name after extraction needs to match the name provided on VFP exactly otherwise its not compliant with COBie 2.4 & it will also effect CAFM systems that are extracting these from directories after download. So Can the:
"name" be considered as well as
"Name_Description_Status_Revision"
Hi all,
Happy to report that this is in fact under development. We'll add a new download format (User Profile > User Settings > Download Format) that will give a new option:
Name_Description_Status_Revision
As part of this work we will also rename the current options to more intuitive names.
Kind regards,
Andrew
Why is this not planned. From my own personal development/coding experience, why is this not an easy fix.
I see alot of Suggestions referring to how organisations would like the files to be named when they download including us. Why cant this be a quick fix as its simply a meta data extraction by the download tool.
To add, It would be nice to see multiple options made available i.e.
<Name>
<Name>_<Description>
<Name>_<Description>_<Rev>
<Name>_<Rev>
Possibly not having the Underscore and having a dash is better as it complies more with naming standards in the UK and some US standards for files i.e. <Name>-<Rev>
I think more transparency should be given to us why this is difficult as I think we are all feeling that there just isn't an appetite from VP to change this, not that it is easy or difficult to do so.
I also believe that when you download information from viewpoint for projects there is no need to have the download number associated in the file name e.g. the first document download has an -01- within the file name and the second number associated in the file name has an -02- within the file name.
This would be really useful if you could add this feature to downloads.
This is a definite must for our downloads, please implement
Please implement asap
