It is often very important to either see documents in alphabetical order of name or description to allow a quick search of if a document exists on the system, or is missing. After this, it is important to have it sorted by the different revisions dates. The Revision Date Modified view is still useful to see what changes have occurred chronologically or during a period of time, so the new view would not replace it, just be a view option under "Views"

Yes, user sort order should be independent of the view, so that everyone can have their own sort preferences stay in effect without having to re-select it.
Also there have been the long-term bugs of document lists changing their order after an Edit or voting, or switching to or from Generic and Editable Grid, whilst the sort arrow on the column heading indicates it's still sorted by the chosen column even though it isn't. Also that the first time a column heading is clicked on, it makes it a descending sort on that column and ascending requires a second click (intuitively this should be the other way around).
