Instead of having to click on a container to see if it contains anything - change the colour from yellow to red it it's empty.

If your home page is set to 'Classic Inbox' you can select CONTAINER STAISTICS at the top and it will display all of the containers at their highest level and show if they have any contents. However it doesn't break it down into sub containers which would be handy.
