Currently when a user clicks on an item in it will automatically download to my local machine.
We would like to just view online or at least be given an option to choose.

This functionality already exists in the system:
Should you wish to view the document, then click the mouse icon next to the document name and select >View and Markup. This will launch the document in our online viewer.
Should you wish to download the document, then click the name of the document (hyperlink) and it will download to your local machine. The experience of this will differ depending on your browser - some will launch an offline viewer in a new tab (Chrome), whereas some simply download the file to a specified location that you then must launch locally (Internet Explorer).
The latter behaviour is configured on your machine, so please seek our your local IT team if you'd like this to change.

Hi David, the option to view online is currently nested in the right click option against the mouse icon. Is this too hidden do you think?

Have received this complaint many times, particularly from site staff who suffer slower internet speeds and where 'every click counts'
I've found this is a browser feature rather than Viewpoint. If using Internet Explorer, try Chrome or Firefox and see if you prefer downloading/viewing files from there.
