It would be good to have an option for a 'Direct Public Link' whereby following the hyperlink immediately downloads/opens the file. Obviously, this would only work for single files, and would need to take the primary file only. We currently use public links to enable web interfaces with buttons for standard forms and guidance documents (hosted on Viewopint).
The file list screen can cause confusion and unnecessary delay when used this way, although it is very useful when linking to a suite of documents. This is why I think this should be a variant of a public link - not a replacement.
I believe fewer clicks between the user and their destination is always a good thing.
