Could we make it possible for an option to set certain characters as disallowed when a user is uploading or revising? For example an underscore in the name field and a O in the revision field? - we could configure this at project level much like keywords etc.

Yes - the number of times I hear people refer to revision C zero 2 ("C02") as "See Oh Two" ("CO2") and so that's what they enter into the system.
