When a project is initiated in the office; a project is created in Viewpoint for Projects with a number of sub containers. A number of security groups have been established at the site level such as Engineering, Managers, Project Managers, Document Control. Sub containers under the project receive different permissions. For example: A container called Stick File which contains documents managed by the document control team will receive the security group Document Control with full permissions and the security group Engineering with read-only permissions. Because different permissions have to be assigned to different sub containers, the permissions cannot be inherited from the project, or at times, even a parent container.
Then, when the project ends, all permissions for all groups on sub containers of that project need to be changed to read-only. This is part of our close out process. Right now, this process is tedious as the permissions have to be modified on many sub containers which takes quite a bit of time. By having an API that allowed permission CRUD operations on projects and containers, this process can be automated and the time cut to almost nothing.
Additionally, this API would allow us to CRUD permissions on containers through a script which could be used to establish base projects. Many times, we have clients which need access to various containers as well. This varies on a project by project basis, so having it in a template is not an effective option. Currently this permissions have to be established manually. Again, this process could be automated and would ensure that permissions were established correctly for all projects which are created.
